How to Ensure Your Baby Sleeps Comfortably and Safely in the Cold Weather

Dressing your little one for the cold days and nights is a worry for any parent. We have put together some tips to hep you navigate what to wear when they are sleeping.

The Risks of Heavy Blankets

Parents can be tempted to choose a heavier, warmer blanket or duvet when temperatures drop but this is not advised. Research has shown a link between overheating and SIDS, making it imperative to avoid blankets. Heavy bedding increases the likelihood of a baby overheating during sleep, which is a risk factor for SIDS.

The Importance of Proper Dressing

Dressing your baby appropriately for winter sleep involves finding the right balance between warmth and safety. Instead of relying on blankets or duvets, consider the use of practical baby sleeping bags which regulate baby's body temperature and come in a variety of TOGs depending on the room temperature. Also, layer your baby in appropriate clothing so that you can easily remove layers if you need to - a long sleeve bodysuit and long sleeve pyjamas are ideal. You can find out more about what to wear under a baby sleeping bag in our TOG Guide.

Understanding TOG Ratings

Tog ratings play a crucial role in selecting the right sleeping bag for your little one. These ratings indicate the warmth level of a sleeping bag or sleeping bag with feet. For cold weather, opt for a baby sleeping bag with a TOG rating of 2.5 or 3.5, ensuring your baby stays snug without the need for additional blankets. A 2.5 TOG is for room temperatures of 15-21 degrees where as a 3.5 TOG is for room temperatures below 18 degrees. You can find out more about Togs and room temperature in our TOG Guide.

How to check your baby's temperature

Babies often struggle to regulate their own temperature so it is very important to check signs of overheating during winter. If your baby is sweating or their tummy feels excessively warm, you need to remove some clothing or bedding. Do remember that cold hands and/or feet are totally normal with babies. You can check the baby's temperature by touching the back of their neck.

The ideal room temperature

You should try and aim for a cosy but not overly warm environment, ideally between 16-20°C.
