WHICH SLEEPING BAG IS RIGHT FOR YOUR BABY?
For newborns, there are three main types of sleeping bags: the classic baby sleeping bag, the swaddle bag and the sleeping bag with feet. The baby sleeping bag is the most popular choice, combining warmth, safety and freedom of movement. A swaddle bag is ideal for unsettled newborns who feel more comfortable with a gentle, womb-like feeling. The sleeping bag with feet offers greater freedom of movement for active babies. Key factors to consider are your baby’s age, room temperature, TOG rating and their individual needs.
WHAT SIZE SLEEPING BAG IS RIGHT FOR YOUR BABY?
The right sleeping bag size for newborns depends on your baby’s height and weight, not their age. For newborns up to approximately 62cm, Slumbersac recommends size 50 (0-6 months sleeping bag with feet) or 56 (classic newborn baby sleeping bag). The sleeping bag should fit snugly around the neck and arms to help prevent your baby from slipping inside, which is important for safe sleep. At the same time, your baby should still have enough room to kick and move comfortably. Always refer to the manufacturer’s size guide. A sleeping bag that is too large can be a safety risk.
WHICH TOG RATING IS RIGHT FOR YOUR BABY?
The right TOG rating depends on your baby’s room temperature. As a guide: 0.5 TOG is suitable as a summer sleeping bag for warmer nights (24°C and above), 1.0 TOG for milder temperatures between 20–24°C, 2.5 TOG for cooler rooms between 16–20°C, and 3.5 TOG works well as a winter sleeping bag for colder rooms below 16°C.
For newborns, we generally recommend having both a 1.0 TOG and a 2.5 TOG sleeping bag to cover changing temperatures. It’s important not to let your baby overheat, as this carries a greater risk than being too cool. The combination of sleeping bag, clothing and room temperature will help you create a comfortable sleep environment. Slumbersac offers the right TOG rating for every season.

NAPPY CHANGING & CARE
Slumbersac sleeping bags for newborns feature practical zips that make night-time nappy changes easier, without needing to fully undress your baby. All materials are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified and gentle on delicate skin. Most styles are machine washable at 60°C, which is especially helpful in the early weeks. Always follow the care instructions for each product to help maintain colour, shape and quality over time.
WHAT IS SWADDLING?
Swaddling means gently wrapping your newborn so they feel safe and secure, similar to the womb. A swaddle bag is a simple, safe alternative to traditional swaddling with a blanket. It can help many newborns settle more easily and may reduce the startle reflex, which can disturb sleep.
It’s important that the hip area allows enough room for natural movement to support healthy development. Swaddling is usually recommended only during the first 8 to 12 weeks.
CO-SLEEPING & THE FAMILY BED
When co-sleeping or sharing a family bed, it’s best to avoid loose blankets, as they can increase risk during sleep. A well-fitting baby sleeping bag for newborns, with the appropriate TOG rating, is a safer option. It keeps your baby warm without slipping or accidentally covering their face. For parents, a Slumbersac adult sleeping bag can also help reduce the need for loose bedding. This way, the whole family can sleep comfortably using the same system, adapted to the room temperature.
SLEEPING BAG WITH FEET FROM BIRTH
A sleeping bag with feet from birth can be a good option for families who want more freedom of movement. It’s important to choose a model that is specifically designed and certified for newborns. In the first few weeks, many midwives recommend a classic baby sleeping bag or swaddle bag, as these support your newborn’s natural sleeping position. From around 3 to 4 months, when babies become more active, a sleeping bag with feet can be a great option for some families.
SLEEP WHEN YOUR BABY SLEEPS?
“Sleep when your baby sleeps” is one of the most common pieces of advice for new parents, but it’s often easier said than done. What can really help is keeping small, consistent sleep routines, creating a calm sleep environment and choosing a suitable newborn sleeping bag to support settling and longer stretches of sleep. Parents don’t need perfect sleep. Even short periods of rest, around 20 to 30 minutes, can make a real difference.
