Tips to Relieve Your Teething Baby

Is my baby teething? Here are some signs to look out for:

  • Swollen gums
  • Red cheeks (or the entire face)
  • Salivation
  • Loss of appetite
  • Moodiness
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Intensive biting

Sometimes, other symptoms are associated with teething, although some experts claim that there is no direct cause and effect. Warning, these signs may indicate underlying disease, do not take them lightly:

  • Fever
  • Loose stools or diarrhoea
  • Nasal discharge
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Earache

If your child has some of the above signs and their condition concerns you, please consult your doctor for an accurate diagnosis.

When Do Babies Start Teething?

The first teeth often appear when your baby is between 4-7 months, sometimes even earlier. Pain associated with teething can last a few days or several weeks, depending on the child. Fortunately, the first teeth are often the most painful.

How to Soothe a Teething Baby

Like most parents, seeing your child in pain is heartbreaking. So, you ask yourself, how do I relieve a teething baby?

Chilled Teething Ring

This classic solution involves placing a teething ring in the freezer or refrigerator. When the cold ring contacts their gums, it numbs the pain for a few moments.

Dummy

Similar to the teething ring, a dummy helps soothe the pain by allowing the baby to chew constantly. Plastic toys and stuffed animals also work well. Sophie the Giraffe, for example, has helped relieve thousands of babies.

Ice Lolly

With its anaesthetic effect, the cold brings real relief. You can offer frozen breast milk sticks or fruit puree if your baby has started on solids.

Bread, Crackers, & Frozen Fruit

Under close supervision, depending on your child's age, you can offer a piece of bread, a biscuit, or frozen fruits and vegetables to relieve their pain.

Massage the Gums

After thoroughly washing your finger, gently rub it against the baby's sore gums. This targeted massage with small pressures will help soothe them. A finger toothbrush can also be used.

Fresh Water

Cold helps soothe toothache, so try offering a glass of slightly cooler water. Warning: do not give them ice water!

Relaxation

Help your baby forget the pain by being creative. Offer a massage or a bath. This relaxation time can allow them to feel more at ease.

Boost the Headboard

While hard to say if effective, slightly raising the crib head with a cloth under the mattress might alleviate nighttime pain. It's worth a try!
