Babies cry for many reasons, and it's a common concern for new parents to wonder if their baby is unwell. However, understanding the different types of cries and having a few soothing techniques can make all the difference. Here are some tried-and-true methods to calm your baby when they won’t stop crying.
Gentle Rocking Motion
One of the most effective ways to soothe a crying baby is to use a gentle rocking motion. Hold your baby close to your chest and gently jiggle them up and down while swaying softly from left to right. If this doesn't work, try putting them in a pram and rocking it back and forth. Sometimes, taking your baby out for a walk can be beneficial as they get distracted by new surroundings and eventually tire themselves out.
Give Them a Comforter
Babies often find comfort in a special toy, blanket, or comforter. If your baby is crying, they might just need their comforter to feel safe and secure. You could try soothing them with their favorite comfort item. Slumbertag comforters, for example, are soft on your baby’s skin and come in fun, colorful designs that both newborns and toddlers find fascinating.
Try a Warm Bath and/or Massage
Just as adults enjoy a warm bath and a spa treatment, babies can find it relaxing too. A warm bath followed by a gentle massage can often soothe a crying baby. Make sure the bath water is at a comfortable, warm temperature, and talk or sing calmly while bathing them. After drying them off, give a gentle-but-firm massage. It’s generally recommended to avoid using lotion or oil until your baby is at least one month old.
